Turn Your Writing Into Opportunities
The Better Writer Challenge
January 5th, 2026 - April 1st, 2026

What if your writing could help you find new clients, make your first dollar online, guest on podcasts and connect with people you admire?

Here's What I Hear From Writers:

  • I'm publishing but I'm stuck at 100 subscribers.

  • I want actionable feedback from someone who understands writing online

  • I want more people to read my essays, but hate social media

  • I miss the structure and community of a course

How The Better Writer Challenge Can Help

The Better Writer Challenge is a three-month container that combines community, coaching, and a touch of competition to help keep writers focused and consistent in their writing journey.

Community
All writers join a private WhatsApp group to:

  • Discuss writing

  • Share posts and celebrate wins

  • Stay motivated through accountability

I’ll track everyone's publishing and distribution each week and award a monthly prize to the writer who shows up the most consistently. There will be up to $300 in prizes throughout the challenge. To deepen connections, I’ll also host two monthly group calls (across time zones) so you can build real relationships with fellow writers in the challenge.

Coaching
This challenge also includes direct coaching with me:

  • Personalized feedback on your essays

  • 1:1 calls to develop ideas, shape drafts, and refine distribution strategies

The Mission
My goal as a writing coach is to help you improve your craft and grow your audience in a way that feels authentic, not a hack that feels salesy or icky. The Better Writer Challenge is where motivated writers push forward together, grow as a team, and make writing a consistent, rewarding part of life.

Hi, I'm Michelle, your writing coach and
community leader for the next three months.

Why Partner With Me?

My creative journey began when I left software sales in 2020 and started a podcast, Build A Wealthy Spirit, with my sister. I started writing through Write of Passage in October 2022, starting from zero subscribers and a brand new Twitter account.Since then, I've published 40+ essays and guided hundreds of writers as a Write of Passage mentor, editor, and watch party host over two years. My experience also includes leading their Twitter growth mentorship group.Having built my own audience from scratch (initially under a pseudonym!), I fully understand the challenges of developing a writing habit and growing a following. I'm also committed to protecting my creativity and making sure that growing an audience is fun for me. I love to help others do the same. My specialty is non-fiction and personal essays.

  • Built an engaged audience of 2,300+ on X (including a tweet with over 1M impressions) as well as 1,200+ newsletter subscribers on Substack (including an essay with over 100 likes and 90 comments)

  • Created new income streams through writing, including freelance work and course creation

  • Coached 8 people this year to help improve their writing, publishing cadence and distribution strategy

  • Co-founded Turn Your Layoff Into A Sabbatical, a cohort-based course based on conversations from people who reached out after reading my essays on taking a sabbatical

  • Featured on podcasts, spoken at events and connected with notable creators in my space that I met through my writing, podcast and Twitter engagement

Most importantly: I know what it feels like to start from zero and show up online before other people start to notice. I have seen how the power of a writing community can help writers keep publishing fearlessly and consistently. I was inspired to create The Better Writer Challenge after seeing the power of a motivated community who share a similar goal to publish more and build a likeminded audience online.I wanted to focus on a three month container because I believe in that time, with the right tools and community, writers have the potential to unlock the power of the internet. That can mean growing their audience, becoming a respected voice in their field, finding new job opportunities, meeting new clients, speaking on podcasts, connecting with their heroes and more.

Writing Coaching Testimonials

I launched a Substack newsletter on AI and worked with Michelle, growing from 0 to 1.5k subscribers over the course of 6 months. She was incredibly supportive and helpful in crafting my content strategy. She also gave valuable feedback on pieces. I'd highly recommend working with her! - Claudia Ng, AI WeekenderMy experience with Michelle has been fantastic -- she's helped me to 1) become a better writer; 2) hold me accountable; and 3) go outside my comfort zone. Working with her has made my writing journey more rewarding and enjoyable. 100% recommend giving her writing challenge a try. - Harrison, The Subtle ShiftBefore working with Michelle, I had half-finished ideas, abandoned drafts, and a dusty Substack I was too embarrassed to open. Now I’m writing and publishing way more, and finally building the kind of audience I used to just daydream about. Michelle’s coaching has been the exact support I needed: kind but honest feedback, thoughtful accountability, and practical advice that actually helps me grow as a writer. She gets the creative process—and she doesn’t let you hide from it. ;) If you’ve been meaning to take your writing seriously (or just blow the dust off your Substack), she’s the one.
- Kelly Davis, Kelly's Newsletter
I started to work with Michelle in Jan 2025. At that point, I was struggling to find a writing rhythm, and also converting ideas into drafts. Working with Michelle gave me a the boost and catalyst I needed. I found her to be supportive, curious to fit to my personality, and able to provide very tangible feedback on every draft I was able to create. In addition, every conversation with her helped get me find clarity, and new ideas for future drafts. Last but not the least, she also accommodated my unfriendly timezone, and was always available for reviews or calls when I needed her. I have a lot to thank Michelle for. - Amit Ghosh, Conscious RebootMichelle’s editing is what made me feel confident to take the leap and (finally) start publishing my writing. She gives pointed feedback and asks the right questions to cut through the clutter and help me identify my main ideas. - Richa Riddering, Richa's Substack

    Frequently Asked Questions

What happens after I sign up?

You’ll receive a welcome email with:
    - A calendar invite for our first group call on October 1st.
    - A Calendly link to book your 1:1 kickoff meeting with me
    - A short onboarding form so I can understand your writing goals and how to best support you
From there, you’ll be added to the WhatsApp group and we’ll officially kick off the challenge together.

    What's the time commitment?

The time commitment is always defined by you. That being said, plan to publish one essay weekly or bi-weekly and attend one of the two monthly group calls. Everything else — the WhatsApp group, feedback, and distribution — fits around your own writing schedule. At the end of the day, you will be able to create a schedule that works best for you. The competition for prizes will be based on frequency of posts.

What if I miss a week?

Life happens. The challenge is about consistency over three months, not perfection. Missing once in a while won’t kick you out, but staying engaged is how you’ll see real results. The goal of the group is to help you keep momentum going when things are good and find your footing when life gets busy.

    What’s your refund policy?

Refunds are available up until the official start date of the program. After the program begins, no refunds are offered. If the minimum of four participants is not met, you may either transfer your payment to 1:1 coaching or receive a full refund.

Can I talk to you before I commit?

Yes! If you’re weighing this decision, you can book a call with me

Who is the Better Writer Challenge for?

Nonfiction writers who want to sharpen their craft, grow an audience, and be part of a motivated writing community for three months. Many people I've partnered with in the past have worked in tech, finance, or entrepreneurship and use writing to build their personal brand. My personal experience is rooted in helping writers with nonfiction essays and helping writers who publish on Substack.

I’m writing a book and / or fiction. Is this challenge for me?

The Better Writer Challenge is designed for nonfiction writers who want to publish essays online and grow an audience. If you’re working on a book or fiction, this may not be the best fit, unless you also want to practice sharing nonfiction essays online as a way to build your voice and connect with readers.

What kind of feedback will I receive for my essay drafts?

You’ll receive both line-by-line edits and big-picture feedback on up to 5 essays each month (max 2,000 words each). Most writers use Google Docs or Notion for their drafts which allow me to make in line comments. My style is kind and constructive. I want to highlight what's working and opportunities for improvement.
